BENEFITING AS A FARMER ORGANIZATION
HOW THE GLOBAL GUIDELINES FOR
PROFESSIONAL FARMER ORGANIZATIONS CAN BE USED IN PRACTICE
Around the globe farmers are working every day to feed the world. They collaborate and connect with each other in farmer groups, organizations, alliances and cooperatives. Working together, they have better access to inputs and markets and help their communities prosper.
Farmer organizations and their leaders should be able to give guidance and good services to help their members succeed. But there is no common understanding of what a professional farmer organization, working as a business looks like. Buyers cannot always find the right farmers to work with, financial institutions cannot always find investment-ready organizations and capacity development practitioners do not always have the right tools to help farmer organizations improve.
We need a common understanding of what a professional farmer organization is – global guidelines that everyone agrees on. Not a certification system where everyone has to do things the same way, but global guidelines that farmer organizations and their partners will have access to.
Everyone needs to be part of the process! AMEA is working with the International Organization for Standards (ISO) so that anyone can participate in creating these guidelines.
In 2018, ISO will be collecting feedback and contributions from anyone who wants to be part of this process.
The global guidelines on professional farmer organizations will be published in January 2019 and will be available after that to the farmer organizations and other organizations working with them through their national standards agency affiliated to ISO.
Examples of farmers using global guidelines in practice
START A NEW FARMER ORGANIZATION
If you are starting a new farmer organization, you can check the global guidelines to see what is needed to run a well governed organization that buyers, financial institutions and capacity development practitioners recognize.
IMPROVE YOUR FARMER ORGANIZATION
If you are already part of a farmer organization and you want to improve an area of your work (for example, you want to manage your finances better or change how your organization is governed) then you can use the global guidelines for making these improvements to better answer the needs of your business partners and find increase in income.
HOLD YOUR LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABLE
If the leaders of your farmer organization are not providing the right services or are not upholding your rights as a member, you have a document to refer to that others in agribusiness (buyers, financial institutions and capacity development practitioners) recognize too.
